“Grumpy Chicken” contemporary chicken painting

Today I’d like to introduce you to “Grumpy Chicken”, my fifth chicken portrait in my series of watercolor portrait paintings.

Grumpy Chicken
Watercolor on hot press paper
6 x 6 inches unframed

Below are some photos of the creation process of “Grumpy Chicken” starting with the pencil drawing.

My reference photo is one I took June 2014 while painting plein air at the Thompson’s Mill near Shedd Oregon. There were chickens, ducks and turkeys wandering the site, interrupting my focus.
