Morning Glory 1 and 2

A favorite location of mine for plein air painting has always been Dancing Oaks Nursery. It’s located between Corvallis and Monmouth Oregon, up in the hills west of hwy. 99W. They have lovely gardens full of gorgeous and unusual plants and it’s truly a place worth visiting. We were there last month to paint, and I fell in love with their glowing morning glories.

Of course, I had to walk around and see everything else before I went to work painting.

Eventually I ended up back at what caught my eye first off — the morning glories. Normally I can’t stand morning glory since we are always pulling up nasty bindweed – which is in the morning glory family – from our garden, but the glowing flowers against the brilliant yellow sunflowers just was too much to resist.

I took a canvas I’d already painted in watercolor and drew a quick pastel pencil sketch of the flower I wanted to paint, peering through a square viewfinder to help lay out my composition.

I then went to work painting with soft pastels.

It was partly cloudy that day, so the sunlight came and went which made capturing the back lit flower a challenge! While waiting for my PVA size to dry I started a second smaller painting, also on an already watercolor painted background.

I finished them up this week and they’re now available at my Daily Paintworks gallery.
